Defining Scope 1

Here, you'll identify and specify direct GHG emissions, which are emissions from sources owned or controlled by your company.

Quick reminder: Scope 1 definitions

Stationary Combustion: Emissions from burning fuel in fixed equipment (e.g., boilers, generators).

Mobile Combustion: Emissions from burning fuel in company-owned or controlled vehicles.

Process Emissions: Emissions released during industrial processes (e.g., manufacturing).

Fugitive Emissions: Unintentional releases of GHGs (e.g., leaks from refrigeration, natural gas systems).

Step-by-step Guide

  1. Navigate to Identify > Emissions Boundaries and go to "Scope 1" tab.

  2. Go through each sub-category (Stationary Combustion, Mobile Combustion, Process Emissions, Fugitive Emissions) by clicking their respective tabs.

  3. For each facility/region listed, carefully read the questions about their direct emission sources.

  4. Select "Yes" if the emission source is relevant for that facility, or "No" if it is not.

Tip for Climate Reporting Specialists: This step directly informs which data points you'll need to collect for your Scope 1 inventory later. Example: If you select "Yes" for stationary combustion, you'll need to gather data on fuel consumption for boilers/generators at that location.

Click "Next" to proceed to Scope 2 once you have answered all relevant questions for Scope 1. Remember to "Save Progress" as you go!
